Austria is heading into a warm and sunny Pentecost weekend, with meteorologists describing the shift as a clear break from the cool, unsettled days of mid‑May. “The Eisheiligen are behind us — now it’s full speed toward summer,” says meteorologist Hannes Rieder, offering a forecast that will delight anyone planning excursions, barbecues, or outdoor celebrations.
Early Week: Still Unsettled in Styria and Carinthia
- Tuesday and Wednesday remain mixed in Styria and Carinthia.
- A blend of sun, clouds, and isolated showers will dominate.
- Afternoon temperatures:
- 21–22°C in much of Styria
- Below 20°C in Upper Styria
- Around 20°C in Carinthia
Rieder notes that this brief unsettled phase is the final remnant of the cooler air masses lingering over the region.
From Thursday: Drier Air, Rising Temperatures
“From Thursday onward, the air becomes significantly drier,” Rieder explains — and the thermometer responds immediately.
- South of Graz and parts of Carinthia may already reach 25°C.
- Upper Styria stays slightly cooler at around 20°C, with some clouds persisting.
Pfingsten: High Pressure Takes Over
By Friday, and especially Saturday and Sunday, a strong high‑pressure system expands across southern Austria.
- Sunshine dominates in both Styria and Carinthia.
- Hardly any wind is expected.
- Temperatures climb toward 28°C.
- Warmest areas: Leoben, Bruck an der Mur, and the southern Styrian lowlands.
- Carinthia shows a similar pattern, with widespread highs around 28°C.
Rieder adds one caveat: “The 30-degree mark will likely not be reached over Pentecost — neither in Carinthia nor in Styria.”
But early next week, Tuesday or Wednesday, the first 30°C of the year could appear in Austria’s south.
A Warm Pentecost Sunday — Even by Long-Term Standards
After several cooler days, the incoming warm air mass pushes temperatures well above seasonal norms.
- Graz is forecast to reach 28°C on Pentecost Sunday.
- That’s six degrees above the long-term average for late May.
Rieder describes the situation as “significantly too warm for the season,” though many will welcome the early taste of summer.
